2010 Western Michigan Football Predictions

After making a bowl appearance in 2008, the Broncos took a step backwards in 2009 failing to make it to a bowl and finishing the season with a 5-7 overall record. In their fifth season under the direction of head coach Bill Cubit Western Michigan began their campaign with two straight loses but rebounded with wins over Miami-Ohio and Hofstra, and then finished the season losing three of their last four games against weaker foes like Ball State and Kent State with a single win coming against the wretched Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Broncos have yet to win a bowl game, and have not seen a title game since 2000.Now the Broncos will look to rewrite the 2010 season with a different ending taking advantage of a weaker Central Michigan looking like it will not be as strong a contender as it was in 2009.Here's a closer look at the 2010 Western Michigan Broncos to help make your College Football wagers winners.Offense:The first task on coach Cubit's plate will be to replace graduating quarterback Tim Hillier. It won't be easy to find a replacement for the four-year starter that racked up 11,000 passing yards with 99 touchdowns. As of now the job is likely to go to 6-foot-2, 225-pound sophomore Alex Carder who completed five of seven passes for 27 yards as a backup last season. Not impressive to say the least, but he has shown improvement during the spring practice going 14-for-18 totaling 147 yards and a touchdown. Waiting in the wings will redshirt freshman Tyler VanTubbergen and senior Drew Burdi should Carder fall short in the Broncos first few contests.Carder will start behind a front line with some big question marks. Four players with starting experience return; three-year starter, guard Nick Clemens, senior center Nick Mitchell, left guard Phillip Swanson and 325-pound junior tackle Anthony Parker who started the last 25 games for WMU. There is also a chance that three sophomores, will be on the field to begin this year's campaign, including 325-pound Sam Jaeger, Kevin Galeher, and the mammoth 6-foot-7, 309-pound RT Dann O'Neill. While the front line is still yet to be set, Cubit should have no concerns about his receiving corps that return six starters from 2009. Top target Robert Arnheim, who hauled in 59 receptions and 700 yards last season will lead the crew followed by upperclassman Juan Nunez and Jordan White. Nunez pulled down 32 passes for over 430 yards and 6 TDs in his first six games before going down with a knee injury midway through the season. He looks to be fully recovered, and ready to build upon last year's short success. White was impressive dragging down 53 receptions for 684 yards and four touchdown receptions. Also, look for sophomore Ansel Ponder to expand on his impressive freshman campaign. The loss of tailback Brandon West cannot be overlooked. West was one of the top backs in the conference last year and there is not much experience on the roster to replace him. Junior Aaron Winchester, who rushed for 165 yards on 46 carries last season as a sub will get the call along with freshman Brian Fields who will most likely share the duties as change of pace back. The Broncos averaged nearly 25 points per game, and were 5-0 when they amassed more than 20 points. In line with their up and down season, they were 0-7 when scoring less than 20 points, the offense needs to provide more consistent firepower.Defense:The Broncos defense was inconsistent to say the least last season, mainly against the pass where Western Michigan finished 92nd in the nation allowing 240-plus passing yards per game.Western Michigan's problems start with an inexperienced o-line this season, but former Hofstra head coach and new defensive coordinator Dave Cohen will look to use a 4-2-5 formation at times this year, giving the Broncos some extra help in that area. One the front four will be junior tackle John Rice the cousin of NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, as well as defensive tackle Weston Peiffer who started in only five games last season, finishing with six tackles and only one sack. Junior T.J. Lynch and sophomore Paul Hazel reside as starts on the ends while Freddie Bishop looks to rebound from spring injuries and build on a solid freshman campaign where he contributed 30 tackles.Jamail Berry, who grabbed a team leading five interceptions and 58 tackles last season, and Miami transfer Doug Wiggins will man the safety positions with possible corners Lewis Toler, a freshman, and on the other side Damond Smith, who is only a sophomore. The team has three returning linebackers but that group has little experience. Deauntay Legrier had a tremendous freshman campaign at middle linebacker and will be back at that spot this year. Fellow sophomores Chris Prom and Dex Jones, both who exhibited moments of solid play last season will join him.2010 Prediction: Third in the MAC: The Bronco's were massive underachievers last season, but have made efforts to fill the holes left by their top offensive weapons as well as working to add key pieces to bolster their defense. The reality is that Western Michigan won just five games last season with plenty of key returning starters. Without them in 2010, to do better is probably unrealistic.
